볼보 써클 파빌리온 (Volvo Circle Pavilion)은 친환경 소재로 만들어진 도심 속 공공장소(public space) 로, 서울의 예술의 전당 잔디마당에 세워졌다. 지구 환경의 지속가능성(Sustainability)을 모티브로, 사용된 거의 모든 재료들이 온전히 재사용, 재활용 되는 것, 지구환경에 미치는 영향을 최소화 하면서 순환되어 새로운 쓰임을 얻는 것을 목표로 계획 되었다. 타이벡 소재로 만들어진 지름 6m의 캐노피 2개와 퍼즐조각을 맞추듯 여러 형태로 조합할 수 있는 퍼즐 벤치로 구성된다.
방수시트로 유명한 타이벡(Tyvek)은 파빌리온 해체 후 플라스틱 판재로 온전히 다시 활용되었다. 이렇게 만들어진 플라스틱 판재는 폐목재와 함께 퍼즐 벤치와 가구 재료로 다시 활용되었다. 퍼즐 벤치들은 파빌리온이 해체된 후, 서울 지역의 초등학교와 어린이집, 어린이 도서관에 기부되었다. 캐노피를 안전하게 지탱해주는 최소한의 스틸 구조체는 초기단계부터 제철소와 협의하여 재활용이 쉽고 분해가 용이하게 제작되어 다시 활용 되고, 시공 현장에서 발생하는 환경 임팩트와 탄소배출량을 줄이기 위해 거의 모든 요소가 공장 제작 (prefabrication) 되어, 현장에 설치되었다.
지속가능성에 대한 분명한 목표를 가지고 모인 다양한 분야의 장인, 엔지니어, 메이커 들과의 협업으로 파빌리온이 완성되었다. 파사드 컨설턴트인 프론트(Front)가 최소한의 가벼운 구조체를 만들어 내기 위해 함께 고민했고, 타이벡 소재로 다양한 친환경 작품을 선보였던 DSLSM과 친환경 리사이클링 플라스틱 판재를 만들어 재료의 순환과 의미있는 활용을 구현하기 위해 함께 노력했다.
타이벡은 방수재로 쓰이면서도, 종이와 비슷한 물성을 가진다. 칼로 오려내어 다양한 패턴들을 구현할 수 있고, 중첩된 패턴들이 입체적인 그림자를 만들어 낸다. 이 입체적인 그림자는 숲 속의 나뭇잎들 사이로 스며드는 빛 (코모레비, Komorebi)를 은유한 것으로, 방문자들은 시간에 따라 시시각각 변화하는 빛과 그림자가 만드는 공간을 경험하게 된다 .
Volvo Circle Pavilion is a public space in the city made of eco-friendly materials and was built on the lawn of Seoul Arts Center in 2023. Almost all materials used were planned to be fully reused and recycled, and to be circulated and find new uses while minimizing the impact on the global environment. It consists of two canopies with a diameter of 6m made of Tyvek material and a puzzle bench that can be combined into various layouts like putting puzzle pieces together.
Tyvek, famous for its waterproof sheets, was completely reused as plastic boards after the pavilion was dismantled. The plastic boards made in this way were reused together with waste wood as materials for puzzle benches and furniture. After the pavilion was dismantled, the puzzle benches were donated to elementary schools, daycare centres, and children's libraries in the Seoul area. The minimum steel structure that safely supports the canopy is manufactured in consultation with the steel mill from the initial stage to be easily recycled and disassembled so that it can be reused. In order to reduce the environmental impact and carbon emissions generated at the construction site, almost all elements are factory manufactured and installed on site.
The pavilion was completed through collaboration with craftsmen, engineers, and makers from various fields who gathered together with a clear goal for sustainability. Front, a façade consultant, worked together to create a minimal, lightweight structure, and DSLSM, which presented various eco-friendly works using Tyvek material, worked together to create eco-friendly recycled plastic plates to realize material circulation and meaningful use.
Tyvek is used as a waterproof material and has physical properties similar to paper. Various patterns by Laser cutting them out, and the overlapping patterns create three-dimensional shadows. This three-dimensional shadow is a metaphor for the light (called Komorebi in Japanese) that seeps through the leaves in the forest, and visitors experience a space created by light and shadow that changes over time.
